Conference: The University mentoring: a tool to improve performance and academic motivation.
Author: Nuria Manzano.

This presentation focuses on the importance of mentoring, as a student academic follow up or "accompaniment", in response to the demands set by the EHEA (European Higher Education) which results in innovative proposals in where teachers should work (incorporation of active methodologies in the classroom, alternative learning methods, teaching innovation through ICT, or skills development, etc).

The new academic context forces the teacher-tutor to assume a more guiding role to the one which had been providing so far. Mentoring and coaching are presented as two supports where this new relationship swings between "new students and "new teachers" in a "new university. "

This presentation will focus on how to carry out the mentoring process for an effective tutorial action with students. We will start from the most common needs that college students have, and we will analyze the aspects that take part in the mentoring relationship: academic aspects, performance improvement, expansion of expectations, improvement of academic motivation, Occupational Guidance, etc.

Although many Universities have been working on these concepts for some time, the current University reality (overcrowded classrooms, poor job prospects, etc) makes more urgent the challenge for teachers and students.

Keywords : mentoring, tutorial action, student monitoring.

Conference: Student Motivation
Author: John C. Burton

Motivation is a principle of student learning.

Motivation is a state of need or a desire that activates the person to do something that will satisfy that need or desire.

Motivation is the condition of being stimulated to action—something that compels someone to action or to do something.

Motivation helps students to focus on the task.

Motivation doesn’t necessarily mean that a person has to like what he is doing because he likes to do it.

There are two types of motivation.
  • Intrinsic—An individual does something just because she feels good about doing it. No one else can control this except the individual.
  • Extrinsic—This motivation comes from outside oneself. There is an outward reward for proper performance of behavior.

Extrinsic motivators can be very powerful. This type of motivation, if not used carefully, can either have no effect or destroy learning.

There are Six Extrinsic Variables of Motivation:

  1. Level of Concern—This is defined as a degree of expectancy or anxiety a person has toward the task at hand.
  2. Success--This is a feeling of achievement or accomplishment experienced by the student following a task that contained an element of challenge.
  3. Knowledge of Results (Feedback)—This is giving specific feedback to let students know how well they are doing.
  4. Interest—Interest means anything that makes something else more novel or vivid.
  5. Feeling Tone—Feeling tone is the atmosphere or climate of the learning environment.
  6. Rewards—Rewards could include extra credit, free recess time, extra computer time, trinkets, etc.
Extrinsic motivation variables can be powerful, if used correctly and wisely, to enhance the learning of students.

Conferencia: La motivación de los estudiantes.
Autor: John C. Burton.

Classroom Managment by Prof. Glen Clark

Professor Glen Clark
Todays videoconference was presented by Professor Glen Clark, a leader in education administration and an expert in classroom management.  With 30 plus years of experience in both settings, secondary and higher education, Prof. Clark was able to share with all of us his personal experiences and core beliefs that have lead his teaching and administration to a very successful career.

Prof. Clark & Prof. Lago
Through his presentation, Profesor Clark was able to address the main causes of classroom misbehavior, disruption, apathy among students, classroom safety and new trends in technology.  He shared with those in attendance a contrast comparison between classroom management vs discipline.

Euromime Students in Madrid
Through his outstanding presentation Prof. Clark provided the response to some basic questions generated by many novice as well as experienced educators, questions such as: "What do I believe is important in classroom management and disciplining a student?" What is the purpose of disciplining a student?" "What is the final objective in instructional deliverance?"

UVU Classroom
Professor Clark´s professional experience allows current and prospective educators to sense and assess some of the basic tools needed for a positive classroom experience.  We thank Glen Clark for his contribution to this project and encourage everyone to listen to his presentation.

Author: Catalina Alonso.

The key concepts of my paper are technology and knowledge as the two great values of our twenty-first century, along with the quality of education as an effort by all.

The relevant authors and researchers over who I have sustained are Toffler, Drucker, Alonso and Gallego and the theory that will support my argument is the theory of learning.

The main ideas on which the paper will focus will be the importance of knowledge, the maximum utility of technology, the commitment of effort and the success of quality thanks to the collaboration of all.

Finally, the questions that I would like to pose to students, once the paper the paper is finished are:

  • Is technology so useful? Always, or at what moments? Why?
  • What functions are most appropriate for learning?
  • How do you experience the process towards knowledge?
  • Do we all need to move towards excellence in quality?

Conferencia:

Title: The new Apocalyptic and Integrated. The debate continues.
Author: Domingo J. Gallego, UNED

This brief tour through the new debate between apocalyptic and integrated, tries to bring close and select the most significant views of the two ideological trends which have been looking for answers during the last forty-five years. We intend that each one of us gets informed, analyses, understands, joins the debate with his own opinion.

Our work conducted within the framework, now classic, presented by Umberto Eco and Marshall McLuhan, gathers the contributions of contemporary authors who have had wide distribution and considerable international success. We review the contributions and proposals from Mark Prensky, Nicholas Carr, Clay Shirky, Robert Darnton, among other contemporary authors.

After our “surfed” by the contemporary relevant information, everyone should pursue the subject, take a stand and build your own opinion.

Conferencia:
Título: Los nuevos Apocalípticos e Integrados. El debate continua
Autor: Domingo J. Gallego, UNED
